Energy Grants


The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) have grants available to business to improve energy efficiency and energy conservation.


Energy Audits

Energy audits evaluate how efficiently energy is being used and identify energy and cost saving opportunities. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) advise “Your business may be eligible for a grant for part of the cost of the energy audit if you spend more than $250,000 a year on energy (per site). Anyone with energy spend over $250,000 a year is eligible to apply. The grant is to part fund the cost of an energy audit. Energy audits must be done in accordance with AES/NZS 3598:2000. The grant funds part of the cost (33%) and is capped at 3% of your energy cost to a maximum of $20,000 per site. Preference is given to applicants who commit to implementing 50% of the audit recommendations that will deliver payback within 12 months.  Your business may be eligible for a grant for part of the cost of the following types of audits:

Energy Audit:               If your business spends more than $250,000 per year on energy.

Design Audit:               If your proposed building has a floor area larger than 1,000m².

Fleet Audit:                  If your transport fleet consists of more than 20 heavy vehicles or marine craft.

Scoping Study Grants:  If your business spends more than $1 million in total per year on energy”.


Preference will be given to:

•   Audits of processes or facilities in the tourism or food processing industries.
•   Audits of commercial buildings.
•   Organisations that commit to implementing 50% of the audit recommendations that will deliver payback within 12 months.


Eligibility

EECA does not provide funding for projects that have already been initiated – including where a contract is signed or deposit already paid. To qualify projects must:

•   Commit to developing an action plan from the energy audit.
•   Provide proof of an active energy management policy or plan.
•   Engage an accredited energy auditor.
•   Provide at least one competitively priced quote (two quotes preferred).

EECA Technology Implementation Grants

EECA advise “If your business spends more than $250,000 per year on energy, including transport fuel, you may be eligible for a grant towards the cost of implementing a technology project. EECA Technology Implementation grants must be for energy efficiency or energy renewable projects. Priority will be given to projects that have been identified in an energy audit, can be replicated across other businesses, involve new or under-utilised technology and other criteria as published by EECA. Grants will be awarded through monthly allocation rounds, closing on the 20th day of each month, and will be allocated through a ranking process”.


Key Features

The maximum amount of the grant is 33% of the cost of implementing the project (to a maximum of $50,000 per site). Priority is given to businesses that have completed an energy audit. Businesses must:

•   Be prepared to make key information publicly available – including project details, energy performance and payback period.
•   Have the capability to deliver the project.
•   Fund 67% of the capital cost.
•   Allow third-party monitoring and evaluation.
•   Disclose any other funding assistance.


Eligibility

To qualify projects must:

•   Have been identified in an energy audit or equivalent.
•   Be able to be replicated across other business.
•   Be cost-effective.
•   Be competitively priced, i.e. provide two quotes from potential suppliers if possible.
•   Have a payback of 2-5 years. Businesses are usually expected to pay for short-term payback projects themselves.
•   Have guaranteed savings (where applicable).
•   Be able to promote combustion tuning or process heat efficiency.
•   Improve business productivity and profitability.
•   Reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
•   Involve new or under-utilised technology.
