Technology for Business Growth R&D Grants
The Technology for Business Growth (TBG) R&D Grant
Technology for Business Growth (TBG) grants offer up to 50:50 funding typically between $100k and $400k. TBG grants are available to companies primarily engaging external expertise to develop new high technology products, processes and services. The market opportunity arising from the research and development should have export potential. Key features of this grant are:
The Business Case
Business growth: You need to demonstrate that your company has a history of growth, or identify changes that will lead to future growth. Copies of your accounts will be required to be submitted as supporting information.
Your new opportunity: You need to present your unique selling proposition and estimate the growth, revenue, and return on investment that will result. Are you targeting an emerging market and is the technology likely to displace competitors? Determine the income that will remain in this country, and any other benefits to New Zealand.
Your target market: Describe the market and competition in your niche area. Outline your intellectual property position and intellectual property protection strategy. You will need to provide copies of intellectual property protection agreements between your company and external experts undertaking R&D on your behalf. Describe how you will take your products to market, your pricing strategy and your commercialisation strategy.
Your research and development project: You need to describe the technical challenges and your approach to overcoming these. You will need to identify the project risks and how you will mitigate these. The project plan will include measurable milestones so that progress can be monitored. A full project budget, including the time and cost for each research and development team member working on the project tasks, needs to be prepared.
How Much Funding is Available?
Technology for Business Growth (TBG) grants offer up to 50:50 funding typically between:
• Under $100k
• Between $100k and $400k
• Greater than $400k.
External Experts
The project must be a “technical stretch” for your company. This means you need to engage outside or external experts to help solve technical problems or overcome technical challenges. External experts, or research and development partners, may include scientists, technologists, engineers, IT specialists, university or Crown Research Institute staff and other qualified professionals and experts in different fields of knowledge. External experts can be New Zealand or overseas based.
Financial History
You must provide financial records to demonstrate you can fund your share of the project costs. It is mandatory to provide full sets of accounts for two years. For applications in excess of $400k certified accounts for the last three years are required.
Time Frame
TBG projects need to be completed within three years.
Payment of the Grant
Progress payments are generally made monthly on submission of financial and project progress reports.
